Anatomy of a Healthy Roof

From top to bottom, ATLroof.com will install your roof with the benefits of a complete modern roofing system.

Any damaged decking is replaced, then the whole roof is covered with new felt. This is important for any home built in the hot and humid South. Particular attention is paid to moisture-gathering areas such as roof valleys and penetrations, which are protected by the addition of a special ice and water shield product. Flashings will be replaced.

Using quality shingles of your choice, we nail each shingle in place using no FEWER than four nails per shingle (not staples).

Finally, the ridge vent is put into place and topped with matching shingles. This system helps keep air moving through your attic, balancing temperatures indoors and out, reducing damage caused by moisture condensation in the winter and excessive heat in the summer.

Proper ventilation helps prevent premature shingle aging and deck warping.

SOME DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SHINGLES

A basic 3-tab shingle is shown at right with a tough fiberglass core sandwiched between two layers of weather-grade asphalt then coated with a thick layer of mineral granules. An architectural shingle essentially melds two cut-out 3-tab shingles to give it the look and dimensionality of cedar shakes or slate.

Shingle life-expectancy, algae and wind resistance are determined by the composition of the granules and the thickness of each layer.
